JOB DESCRIPTION:

A Luteman assists with the application of asphalt on highways/private roadways/parking lots/driveways using handheld tools. Must partner with other crew members to pave roadways per plan specifications and if need be, to perform tasks of other positions as instructed by crew foreman to insure daily schedules/estimates are met.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Understand and execute paving procedures while following instructions to meet the standards of the project.
  • Distribute and rake asphalt material used in construction, repair and resurfacing.
  • Match and finish freshly made asphalt paving joints.
  • Finish surfaces by smoothing and tamping asphalt material to the proper grade and thickness to properly adhere material to road surface.

Asphalt Milling Machine Operator

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Milling Machine Operator operates equipment used for milling and removing existing asphalt to prepare the surface for new asphalt.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Responsible for control and operation of the milling machine.
  • Operates milling machine to properly mill asphalt to desired specifications based on usage.
  • Manipulates hand or foot levers to control movements of milling machine that mills asphalt on roadways and related surfaces such as parking lots, streets, etc.
  • May perform other related duties, such as preventive maintenance on all milling machinery.
  • The operator is responsible for the efficient working condition of the equipment and is expected to perform minor servicing and maintenance or refer major problems to the Foreman or Superintendent.

Asphalt Paver Operator

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Paver Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the asphalt paver. This position operates paving machines to spread and level hot mix paving material on subgrade of highways and streets with the aid of stakes and level gauges to ensure mix is placed to the proper grade and thickness.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Operate the paver and other heavy equipment in a safe and appropriate manner.
  • Perform daily maintenance and safety checks of equipment.
  • Preheat paving screed before placement of asphalt.
  • Operate the Paver controls to lower the screed auger, control the hopper, and navigate the direction of the paver.
  • Align the paving machine into position when receiving asphalt by dump truck, and maintain constant flow of asphalt into hopper; ease paver forward, safely pushing dump truck along construction surface.
  • Observe distribution of paving materials along screed and control the direction of the screed to eliminate voids at curbs and joints.
  • Line paver appropriately to the work area, and ensure proper application of the asphalt, smoothing it evenly to the desired height, width, and depth
  • Attach extensions to screed to adjust width

Asphalt Roller Operator

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Roller Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of Breakdown Rollers and Finish Rollers. The Roller Operator distributes, breaks down, compresses and gives a finished surface to cooling asphalt. The first stage breaks down the asphalt mix with a breakdown roller. The second stage compresses it with a roller, and the finish roller gives the final finish.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Operate the roller and other heavy equipment in a safe and appropriate manner.
  • Perform daily maintenance and safety checks of equipment.
  • Safely operate roller in successive overlapping passes over surfaces to be compacted, rolling subgrade and asphalt to desired compaction and smoothness.
  • Determine speed and direction of machine, based on knowledge of compressibility of material under changing temperatures, so that ridges do not form by excessive pressure.
  • Push hand roller and pound surfaces using hand tamp, or guide portable power roller over areas not accessible to road roller.
  • Operate self-propelled steel-wheeled, vibrator, segmented, or other type of roller to compact earth, subgrade, sub-base and asphalt surfaces
  • Operate the Breakdown roller to massage hot mix asphalt into place.
  • The second roller uses the Rubber Tire Roller to compress hot mix asphalt to desired compaction.
  • Operate the Finish Roller in successive overlapping passes to apply final finish, and remove imperfections with a finish roller.
  • Operate Pad Foot Roller, using vibrate when necessary, until ground surface is hard.
  • Operate Smooth Drum Roller, to seal subgrade and base surfaces.
  • Operate other heavy equipment and other construction related duties as required
  • Roller operators may also be required to operate Steel Drum and Pad Foot Rollers to compact and seal earth fills, sub grades, and flexible base.

Asphalt Screed Operator

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Screed Operator is a highly skilled position involving control and operation of the screed on the asphalt paving machine.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Operate asphalt screed to apply asphalt per plan and quality specifications as instructed by crew superintendent to insure daily schedules/estimates are met. Also must perform additional tasks of other positions as needed and instructed by foreman..
  • Ability to operate or initiative to learn to operate other equipment required on an asphalt crew
  • Ability to operate asphalt paver/screed within designated area with attention to detail and emphasis on craftsmanship
  • Manipulates hand or foot levers to control movements of machine spreads and levels asphalt on subgrade of highway and related surfaces such as parking lots, streets, etc.
  • Any other duties assigned by your Foreman and Superintendent.

Concrete Finisher

JOB DUTIES:

Smooths and finishes surfaces of poured concrete floors, walls, sidewalks, or curbs to specified textures by performing the following duties.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Signals concrete deliverer to position truck to facilitate pouring concrete.
  • Moves discharge chute of truck to direct concrete into forms.
  • Spreads concrete into sections of forms with rake or shovel.
  • Levels concrete to specified depth and workable consistency, with hand held screed and floats to bring water to surface and produce soft topping.
  • Smooths, and shapes surfaces of freshly poured concrete.
  • Finishes concrete surfaces, or wets and rubs concrete with abrasive stone to impart finish.
  • Removes rough or defective spots from concrete surfaces, and patches holes with fresh concrete or epoxy compound.
  • Molds expansion joints and edges.
  • Sprinkles colored stone chips, powdered steel, or coloring powder on concrete to produce prescribed finish.
  • Produces rough concrete surface with broom.
  • Mixes cement with hoe or concrete-mixing machine.
  • Directs subgrade work, mixing of concrete, and setting of forms.
  • Breaks up and repairs old concrete surfaces.

Curb Machine Operator (Concrete)

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Curb Machine Operator will be responsible for operating a self-propelled curb machine which finishes fresh concrete to contour.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Drives and operates curbing machine to extrude concrete curbing on parking lots: Reads specifications to determine location, width of base, and shape of curbing to be installed.
  • Starts machine motor and guides machine that extrudes curbing along guidelines.

Field Service Technician

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Field Service Technician is responsible for providing expert level diagnosis, troubleshooting and repair of various types of equipment at our jobsites.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Performs heavy electrical and computer repairs.
  • Disassembles, inspects and determines parts needed and reassembles to factory specifications.
  • Interprets and utilizes information from operating, maintenance and service manuals.
  • Interacts with field and office personnel to answers repair-related questions as required.
  • Safely drives a service vehicle.
  • Performs various other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma required.
  • Previous experience with heavy construction equipment, troubleshooting and diagnosing mechanical repairs.
  • Must have thorough knowledge of engines, transmissions, electrical and other related components to analyze high level problems quickly and make needed repairs.
  • Must have computer knowledge.
  • Must be well organized and be able to work independently.

Fuel Truck Driver

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The fuel truck driver must make sure that all of the off road equipment at the job-sites are fueled, greased, and oils are topped off on a regular schedule.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Responsible for fueling and greasing all equipment at assigned job sites.
  • Responsible for checking oil and fluid levels, and topping them off as needed.
  • Responsible for loading fuel truck at the fuel station.
  • Reads gauges or meters to ensure correct quantity of fuel is loaded or dispersed.

Laborer

Job Description

An entry level construction worker performs tasks involving physical labor at highway, building, and heavy construction projects. This position may operate hand power tools.

Job Duties:

  • Perform a variety of tasks involving strenuous manual labor in heavy/highway construction projects; perform manual work in preparing surfaces for paving.
  • Shovel bituminous concrete (asphalt) into construction area.
  • Assist in patching asphalt with hot and cold mix. Excavate and fills trenches and ditches
  • Fine grade fill to grades given by foreman.

M.O.T Flagger

Job Description:

Controls movement of vehicular traffic through construction projects.

Job Duties:

  • Discusses traffic routing plans, and type and location of control points with superior.
  • Distributes traffic control signs and markers along site in designated pattern.
  • Directs movement of traffic through site, using sign, hand, and flag signals.
  • Warns construction workers when approaching vehicle fails to heed signals to prevent accident and injury to workers.
  • Informs drivers of detour routes through construction sites.
  • Records license number of traffic control violators for police.
  • Gives hand marker to last driver in line up of one-way traffic for Flagger at opposite end of site, signaling clearance for reverse flow of traffic.

Paving Superintendent

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Supervise and provide direction and guidance to job site Foremen on day-to-day field operations relating to asphalt placement activities at various sites.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Perform jobsite quality control checks; ensure quality assurance on all phases of work; visit assigned jobsites on a continuous basis to assess the productivity, quality, safety, and scheduling of manpower and equipment and report to the appropriate person(s); ensure efficiency and quality work relating to placement of asphalt; ensure the punch list for job cleanup is completed and a documented follow up walk-through done to ensure all punch list items have been addressed.
  • Provide overall leadership and direct the activities of several Foremen; fill in for Foremen when needed; work with Foremen to coordinate forces when possible to increase productivity; coach/mentor Foremen to adopt a more collaborative approach to leadership and on improving communications on the job site; accountable for timely and accurate completion of employee paperwork/forms to include but not limited to Employee Status Change (i.e. pay rate, address/name change, termination, promotion, benefit enrollment, etc.), Performance Appraisal, Attendance Reports, Warning Notices, First Report of Injury, Accident Reports, etc.
  • Review all projects to focus on equipment and manpower among divisions to maximize efficiency; review job costs, manpower, and equipment utilization reports; attend all in-house preplanning/preconstruction meetings; ensure “essential information” for running a more efficient and productive jobsite is filtered down to the Foremen after every preplanning/preconstruction meeting (to ensure continuity and accuracy of information this should be provided in a standardize report format so all foreman receive the same type of information); plan and review projects with Estimators and Foremen to provide input on jobsite organization and resource allocation; assist Estimators when requested with bid preparation.
  • Monitor all job site operations for compliance with contract requirements for noise and dust control, non-interruption of Government activities, and utility shutdown procedures; promote and enforce safety policies; have a solid understanding of site safety, health, and substance abuse programs to ensure the safety and well-being of all personnel at the jobsite, address basic questions from employees, and/or know where to direct jobsite personnel to get their questions answered.
  • Check equipment to monitor for abuse, neglect, repairs and utilization; work with Equipment Manager to make recommendations on new and additional equipment needs.
  • Interface with Owner’s representatives and other parties external to the company to assure overall progress on the jobs meets their expectations and demands.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • High School education required. Some college work preferred. However, you may substitute with (3) three to (5) five years of field construction experience with at least (2) two years in a leadership position.

Pipe Layer

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Responsible for assembling, connecting, and constructing pipe systems for storm or sanitation sewers, drains, and water mains. Ensures ground is prepped and trenches dug out for pipes. Aligns pipes and seals joints together with cement or glue.

Preventative Maintenance Technician

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Preventative Maintenance Technician safely and efficiently services heavy construction equipment to factory specifications at jobsites.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Performs basic services, including changing oil, checking fluid levels, replacing fuel filters and other similar services to factory specifications at our jobsites.

Runner

Job Description:

As the delivery driver for Gray & Son, you will be responsible for covering the company switchboard from 6:30 to 8:00 am daily, driving to each of the Maryland Paving (MPI) asphalt plants, transporting documents, items and daily bank deposits.

Job Duties:

  • Daily coverage of company reception area including answering the main switchboard.
  • Deliver interdepartmental mail daily.
  • Collect and return supplies, material tickets, and various items to the four asphalt plants: Finksburg, Texas, Rosedale and Aberdeen.
  • Pick-up deposits from each of the locations and take to bank daily.
  • Pick-up and drop off any/all bid related information as required by Estimating department.
  • Attend bid sessions as needed.
  • Run any errands needed.
  • Any and all other duties as assigned.
